11-Year-Old with a Fear of Outside

Since spring started, my son has developed a BIG fear of being outside. He says he is afraid of bees but it seems like it is anything that is flys by him, even a shadow from a bird scares him. I was waiting for him to get home from the bus stop yesterday and he wasn't home at 3:05 as usual, he didn't get home till 3:15. A neighbor said she saw him standing on the corner of the bus stop screaming because he saw a bee. I need suggestions to help him get over this fear. Summer is coming and we are usually outside during the day. He would rather be out when there is no sun or in the rain and if he stays in the house it isn't fair to our other 2 kids why he gets to stay in and they are outside. I NEED HELP!!!! Please...he is on Focalin XR and has been for about 4 months now so I am kinda ruling out the meds but that is just what I think. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. :)

Hello. My son has fears as well. For some reason it is really hard to get them to overcome them and they come and go as well. With my son, anyway, most of his fears stemmed from high anxiety. We ended up putting him on an antidepressant along with the stimulant to ease his worries. It helped for us. Otherwise, you could also have him do a little research on bees and see what he comes up with. Sometimes it helps if they know what they are dealing with. Only certain bees sting....maybe he could find comfort in that!

Outdoor Anxiety

Poor guy. It sounds like your son is suffering from an anxiety disorder, which is a comorbid condition sometimes associated with ADHD. Sometimes it is the meds, sometimes it is something else. Was there a specific event that triggered the anxiety? It may not even be related to bees at all. If you feel the anxiety is interfering with his life, you might want to talk with his doctor about anxiety treatment options.

I hope this helps.

ADHD ANXIETY DISORDERS

My son has ADHD and has been taking medications for 4 months now. Yes, it's true that his focusing has greatly improved. However, he has developed strange phobias, including bugs, anything gross, and the uncanny ability to find a hair on anything that it shouldn't be on! Yesterday at McDonald's, we had to eat outside because there were hairs or other dirty things on all of the tables... The medicines bring this out in him, as he didn't have this problem before. Granted McDonald's needed to bus their tables, but he carried the situation to a new level... I would have used a napkin to wipe the table and bench. However, that would not have sufficed for him. Not wanting to argue, we ate at the cleanest table we could find outside.

Help for anxiety disorder

I have a 12 year old who has faced down many anxieties over the years. There are some great books out there on children's anxiety that take you through a step by step behavioralist approach where the kid takes baby steps towards exposing themselves to whatever frightens them. It really works. Go to your library and also visit the Boston University Center for Childrens' Anxiety. They have some audio tapes and other tools you can buy for a nominal price. Good luck!
