Newly Diagnosed, Isolated, Can't Find Resources to Help

I lost my Job in January. I have lost many jobs because of the symptoms of ADD. I do well interacting with people.

Now I am at home alone and confused. I Google like crazy for info on centers or schools that specialize in ADD, and have no luck. (And I am a master at finding things on Google). I have a doctor, but I have no support or community around me and I feel like I am sinking.

Hi, Richard.

I empathize with your isolation. At times, people treat us like we are lepers. We have much to offer, and I definitely recommend balancing your research with information that extols some of ADHD's positive attributes. This means stay clear of the Russel Barkley's of the ADHD world.

Dr. Lara Hono-Webb is one of the pioneers of the "ADHD is a gift" school of thought. Try her Website at: http://www.visionarysoul.com

I also write about ADHD gifts on my Website at: http://www.adhd-information-exchange.com/ADHD-Gifts.html

Get your hands on the two classic books co-authored by Dr. Edward Hallowell: "Driven to Distraction" and "Delivered from Distraction." Hallowell provides balance in his analysis of ADHD.

Hope this helps.

Thank You

Hi Keith,

Thanks for all the information! ...And of course the responding to my post...

Your website is wonderful. Very easy to navigate, with information very easy to access.

I have the Audio Book "Delivered from Distraction", I love the authors approach, (I will pick up a printed copy so I can highlight and bookmark the main ideas) ...and thank you for the other resources that build on a more positive approach.

ADHD Resources

Hello Richard:

Welcome to the ADDitude forums! Have you looked into CHADD support groups in your area? It might help to meet and talk with other ADD adults facing similar challenges. You might also find some support groups in the ADDitude Directory.

The ADDitude site also has some great information about succeeding at work with adult ADD. I would specifically suggest Acing the Job Interview: Career Advice for ADD Adults and [[NewWindow(http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/2496.html, _self, Find Your Dream Job: ADHD Career Advice )]].

Finally, you might consider hiring an ADD Coach to help you set up some systems for better addressing the challenges that have resulted in lost jobs in the past.

I hope this helps!

Newly diagnosed, isolated, etc.

Richard001- Does your health insurance have an Employee Assistance Program(EAP) attached to it? If it does, please call them and ask to speak with a counselor that has ADD experience. If you have no EAP, then contact your state unemployment office and ask them what support they can give you. Can your doctor refer you to a counselor?

Richard - connect

hi Richard -

You had mentioned that you like Edward Hallowell's approach (author of Delivered from Distraction) - he has a few books out, but one that I'm reading right now is called "Connect". I sounds as if you are isolated and this might be a good book to read. I am reading it because my ADD, Axiety and depression often keep me isolated, I don't want to be around others besides my family (husband and kids) for fear that I'll say something stupid, do something stupid or be criticized for my actions. But, my ADD doc (a pioneer in his field in my State) said that I need to get out and "connect" because it's really affecting my depression/anxiety in a way that it's all getting worse.

Thankfully i am not homebound - i get out and around and bring my son to preschool. But I have to force myself to try to make connections, to continue my healing. One other bit of advice is if you could sign up for a class to take. It's a great way to make connections based on like-minded people that have similar interests. I am always trying to find a new class to take to keep things interesting. I get bored easily (my low attention span again...)

good luck to you!
