A House Divided

First, I want to thank everyone for having a please like this to come to. I have been feeling alone and torn. My 6 year old DS has always had social problems since preschool. When these were first brought up to the ped, she just said perhaps he was not getting enough sleep. So we went through two years of preschool not sure why his moods would change from day to day. However, when he started kindgertan this year things got worse. He started to throw things and hit others. He would growl at his peers and refuse to work. Anything that he did not get EXACTLY the way he wanted was the end of the world, to the point of no regard to his safety or others ( running out in front of traffic, etc.) . So the first idea that the ped dr had was Alsberger ( not sure if spelled correctly)...so then I got in touch with a dr that has two children of his own with BD. Anyway, to make a long story short, we are now trying to get a proper diagnois, and are in the middle of trying to figure out what meds might help. His learning at school has stopped because his behavior is so disprutive that he spends most of his days in the principal office. As if dealing with this on a daily basis is not bad enough, I have in-laws, strangers, doctors, and etc....of people trying to tell what they think is best. One set of parents says he needs no meds just a different classroom. Other set says opposite. My DH is convinced there is nothing wrong with him and we just need to be stricter. I also see all the publicity againest medicating children, but I wonder how many of them have had to literally carry their child to the car and thank god for child safety locks when you child is 6 years old. How many of them have seen your oldest child beat on the youngest with no signs of empathy? grrr!!!! so many issues and questions and it seems nowhere to turn

Related Conditions

Hi Holly:

Thank you for your post. I feel for you and your son, who sounds like he is struggling with something he doesn't understand - that no one does, actually. I'm not a doctor or an ADHD professional, but your description sounds like more than just ADHD to me... the throwing, hitting, temper tantrums, and running into traffic are all very extreme behaviors and if they're happening on a regular basis, then I do think you should look into having your son evaluated for both ADHD and related conditions like Oppositional, Defiant Disorder (ODD), bipolar disorder, Aspergers...

Here are some articles that might help you navigate the way toward a correct diagnosis and treatment plan (which may or may not include medication...)

Thank you

Thank you for the reply. I read some of the articles and can relate to some of the info. Although, I feel as if the dr. is not listening to me. I don't belief DS has Add/ADHD or if he does he also has other problems. I am also very discouraged by the info I have found on ODD as if this whole thing is my fault. Although, I don't see how....it says that the causes are abusive homes and such. We have no such home, and it would be so much easier if he did because I would understand why all this is happening to us. I am not sure what exactly is going on.
