Driving with ADD

I'm an adult with ADD and my experience is that driving is difficult without my meds. I'm easily distracted, especially when under emotional stress, and have had accidents during those times. Minimizing distractions inside the car with the driver is essential; phone, radio, passengers will each present a challenge.

What does your child's doctor say about this? Managing medications so that they are in effect while your child is driving would need to be coordinated there. Is there any way you could delay driver's ed for a couple of years until your child is out of high school? To what extent is your child involved in identifying possible problems and proposing solutions to make driving as safe as possible?

I postponed my daughter's driving my setting two requirements: she had to have a "B" average in school and would be required to pay the difference in the cost of auto insurance. She could manage one but not both at the same time. Her husband taught her to drive.

Hope these thoughts help. Good luck.

ADD Teens and Driving

Many experts recommend restricting ADD teens from driving at night, from driving friends in the car at any time, from eating while driving, from listening to music or using cell phones/text messaging while driving, etc. Here are some articles that might help with additional ideas for driving safety...

I hope that helps!
