Shopaholic

Hallo everybody! Have you got good advice for me with regard to my shopping behaviour? I'm a shopaholic and as some of you might know because of own experiences I tend to buy things that are not neccessary at all. I tried various things and strategies in order to reduce my impulsive behaviour while shopping, but nothing worked. I really fear to get serious troubles if I continue with my behaviour. So the question is: What can I do? Is there any good advice you could give me - perhaps because it helped you to stay 'sober'? It would be great to get some advice of you. Thanx and have a nice day!

Shopaholic

Hi, my name is Fran. I have inattentive ADHD, OCD and anxiety. I really don't have advice for you, because all my credit carde are full with QVC purchases. I have always been obsessive with things, long before I was diagnosed. I don't even have the room for all the stuff I buy from QVC. I have bought doubles of things, and didn't realize it when I purchased the items. That brings me to clutter. I have alot of clutter, and have found things from years ago including old checks. The more I try to throw things out, and think I have accomplished alot, it doesn't look it. I think that goes with the inattentive ADHD. If it doesn't, I still have a big problem. I really get crazy when I haven't opened something, and find it months later. I have made progress in that area. I do take medications, but I don't see that it helps with my problem. I wish you the best, and if you have any good suggestions, please e-mail me at franfran6e@yahoo.com. Take care!!!!! A perfect example is that when I send an e-mail, I go over it for mistakes and wording.I am a mess in this area!!

General advice

Hi Fran, we seem to have the same problem... ;-) so let's try to find a sollution. You are addicted to TV-shopping and I am addicted to shopping in general. In your case TV seem to be the main trigger. Is it possible for you to block QVC or other shopping channels? Is it possible to ask your provider to block these channel? If this is possible you should do it as soon as possible. After one week of TV-shopping-'chastity' you will be really sad, depressive and aggressive - that's the fact. If you take medications you should talk to your psychiatrist and tell him about it. Perhaps you can change your daily dose of meds in order to ease the withdrawal-symptoms. Because addicts try to find a compensation you should install a web-page-blocker on your PC as well in order to avoid shopping on the internet. Try to avoid shopping with credit cards. Avoid going to shopping mall unless it is really urgent. If you have got a good friend ask him or her to help you. A coach might encourage you to stay on track. Another opportunity is to join the shopaholic anonymous in your area. They might help you as well. Talk to a professional debt-consultant or bank-employer in order to reduce your debts. Try to reduce your credit range or the overdraft credit. In the worst case try to start private insolvency proceedings - if possible in your country. Sell all the items you don't need on eBay in order to get some money. And always keep in mind: THERE IS A SOLLUTION for YOUR PROBLEM but...(a) stay on track (b) do whatever you need to do in order to reduce your debts (c) adjust the dose of your meds to your needs - but talk to a professional first (d) get professional help (e) get rid off your credit cards (f) try to stay focused on your goal! I don't know whether this is okay for you...I am not an expert and I've got the same problems!

SO we need your advice - YES, you out there! Please participate in this thread! Imagine you would be in our situation! You've got an idea? Please post it!

Shopaholic too!!!

OMG!!! It is like hearing myself in a recording. I am a shopaholic when it comes to Goodwill. I can not drive by one. At least once to twice a week, I have a day set aside to go "treasure hunting" as I call it. I buy household goods. I feel it is an outlet for me.. it is therapeutic to put things together... to decorate. But, it is a problem, there are times when I put these treasures on my credit card. I know when I am doing it, it is wrong, and I should not be doing it. It doesn't change things though.

I am a little OCD too; just like you, I proofread everything many times (often times changing or rewording sentences). It can be very time consuming. This site is comforting; it is reassuring to know I am not alone.

Thank you.. keep me posted on your progress.. on what you find is working.
