So Confused: What Med(s) To Take?!

I am a 36 year old woman who has recently been diagnosed with ADHD. I have struggled with anxiety for about 10 years and have been on antidepressants for the last 9 years and been off the last 6 months.

While on antidepressants, the anxiety was better but never fully gone, must have been b/c the ADHD was not being addressed. SO, now I am looking to start up meds again and want to address the ADHD before I tackle (or need to) the anxiety which could be from the ADHD. So confusing......my doc (who I really trust and have used the last 6 years) recommends Provigil. I was set to start on it until I realized that I had to pay $550 out of pocket for 60 pills!!!! Unbelievable! Plus, I heard it may decrease the effectiveness of my IUD (Mirena) which I definitely don't want as I already have 2 children and don't wish to have any more.

I am hesitant to use the stimulants like Ritalin, etc and my doctor does not like Strattera for some reason. He mentioned Wellbutrin but he is doubtful that will work for me. Any advice??????? Thanks!

ADHD and Anxiety

Hi newlydiagnosed:

Welcome! I know the maze of ADHD meds is confusing enough - throw in a related condition like anxiety and it can make your head explode. It sounds like you are on the right track, though, in treating your ADHD first and then addressing the anxiety. ADDitude just published a great article about primary vs. secondary anxiety and treatment strategies for both - I would highly recommend checking that out. It's targeted toward children with anxiety, but you should find it relevant.

I can't recommend any specific medication, but I do know that stimulant medications are the most commonly used for treating adult ADD.

You might find some good feedback from other ADD adults in the medication review section of the ADDitude forums.

Best of luck!
