Teens in Trouble

My son is 16 and last May began to have trouble with the law. He was stopped and a small bit of marijuana was found on him. He began outpatient counseling with a drug and alcohol facility and during his intake the counselor told me that he believed that my son was smoking because he had an underlying anxiety disorder. My son told me that so many thoughts go on in head and that he feels stress. He said that he couldn't stop thinking about everything and he found that marijuana made him feel relaxed and not worried. Since last May my son ended up with several more cases and still we don't know what charges will end up being filed. Does anyone know of any cases where the fact that the teen had ADHD was taken into consideration in deciding how to deal with him. He is receiving counseling and inpatient treatment but because of the number of cases (all dealing mostly with possession of marijuana) they are talking about sending him to a juvenile facility or foster home. None of his cases involved violence of any kind. I have read that 20-40% of ADHD teems have an underlying anxiety disorder and also that marijuana is the drug of their choice. Right now I am very frustrated with the juvenile system, the police and the county attorneys. The details of all that Jordan has gone through since last May are long but I just wanted to know if I as a parent or Jordan have any rights or if there have been cases where ADHD was taken into consideration when deciding what to do with the juvenile.

Debra: Are you still there? If so, and you'd be willing to share, I'd be interested to know what happened last March and since. My grandson (21) is going to be sentenced to prison tomorrow. ADHD can be documented but stimulant meds are withheld if they already have you in the system. So the alternative is? The refuse to fill in the gap "what TO do" but severly punish methods to self medicate. Reality-based D&A treatment is offered, if you offend again................you are hopeless and go to jail. We need a thread to address this.
