Focalin Dose Increase for 2 Hrs More Efficacy?

All,

We are confused by what our doctor is telling us. Our 7 year old was just put on meds 5 mg of Focalin (to last between 6-8 hrs). THe dose is effective enough that her personality is there, she is doing so much better in school, and we aren't noticing eating or sleeping issues. Her teacher has noticed the meds seem to drop off around 1-1:30 in the afternoon, she takes them around 7:30-8am, and is getting a good 6 hours efficacy. I was wondering instead of giving her a supplement med at night can't we give her another pill during the day for another 6 hours. I asked the pediatrician this and he wants us to double up her morning dosage to 10mg. We are just playing phone tag, in which I have posed my question very specifically twice both with the same answer. I am just wondering if anyone out there with experience can offer any advice. We were hesitant to medicate to begin with and are very happy with the results and almost no side effects this low dose has afforded our daughter. We are weary of an arbitrary ( seems to us) increase for an additional 2 hours of efficacy if it even does that. We also are concerned about courting unnecessary side effects, when we know this low dose is already working so well.

ADHD Afternoon Trouble

We hear this quite a lot from parents of ADHD children - the afternoon nightmare zone after meds wear off and homework remains to be done. You already know that your doctor's advice trumps all, but it's worth mentioning that Kathleen Nadeau, Ph.D." recommends that kids take a short-acting "booster dose of medication in the afternoon as long-acting medication is wearing off. One thing to keep in mind: make sure you administer the medication early enough that it wears off before bedtime!

I hope this helps, and that your doctor will check out the article linked above!
