Taking Pills Easily for 8 Y/O

My son is taking concerta and cannot swallow the pill we tried and tried this morning. Today was our first day and it was horrible. I had to stick my finger down his throat. Someone please help! As you know, concerta is time release and capsule so we cannot crush it.

Swallowing ADHD Medication

We hear many stories of children who have trouble swallowing pills that end up doing well on the Daytrana patch. I would suggest asking your doctor about it - especially since your son isn't yet taking the Concerta and could more easily switch medications now rather than later.

Another option is long-acting methylphenidate or amphetamine capsules, which can be broken open and the contents sprinkled over food.

I hope this helps...

How to get kids to take pills

We had the same problem; neither of our 2 boys would swallow pills, so for a few months we crushed them and stirred them into applesauce or lemonade. This became tiresome so we asked our pediatrician, who had FANTASTIC advice that worked immediately with one of them, and the other, who is more reluctant, followed shortly thereafter.

His advice is based upon the most common reason for resistance, which is that nasty taste that can get stuck in your throat and on your tongue if the pill gets stuck.

purchase tiny breath mints, mini-m&ms, and regular size m&ms. Have them start by swallowing the breath mint. progress to mini m&ms. When they get to the regular size m&ms, they can EASILY swallow concerta. (it is actually not much bigger than some breath mints.)

hope it works for you!
