Help! I Just Can't Handle My 5.5 Year Old Anymore

My son started focalin 2.5 once a day 1 month ago... the only drawbacks are that he cant sleep at night. His Dr. says to give it a few months.

The other problem is that the medication wears off by 3 and thats when I get him from school. He is out of control, defiant, picks on me to annoy me and drives me to my breaking point. He wont listen and tells me no... I have tried time outs but he runs out... I chase him and its a game to him... I try to take things away and he could care less.

I want to go on the time release meds but cant until he is 6... He is in behavioral therapy and thats not working either...

Any ideas before this moms runs away!!!!!!!!!!!!!>>>>>>

Talk to your Dr. again

My son started the extended release meds in August, right before school started - he just turned 6 in January. The Drs. wanted us to start before then, but he was taking Methylin twice a day and doing fine. If we knew we were having a challenging day, he'd get a third dose.

I believe the first extended release we tried was Focalin. He takes Vyvanse 20 mg. now and does great for the most part. Yes, it wears off early, probably by 3-4 pm, but we get by. BTW, he's ADHD - Hyperactive type and ODD.

Thanks

We have a meeting with the behaviorist Friday... I cant help but think it our parenting skills... my son knows what he is doing.. he tells me he doesn't want to listen to me.. that he likes to push my buttons.. BUT when he is on his medicine he is so much better.....

I think what I got from you is that when he is 6 try some more meds......I agree... maybe a time released one...>> I am so new to this I dont know what I am talking about....

More About Alternative Therapies

Hi there:

Helping young children to manage their ADHD is a huge challenge for lots of parents. I would definitely recommend downloading ADDitude's free Alternative ADHD Treatment Report, which includes great information about how nutrition, exercise, behavior therapy and other non-drug therapies can help manage ADHD symptoms.

I would also recommend reading Preschool-Age ADHD Children: Too Young for a Diagnosis? - a great ADDitude archive about diagnosing and treating children as young as 5.

Finally, here is a whole collection of articles about behavior therapy.

I hope this helps!
