Need advice - have son in college

My ADHD son attends San Diego State Uni and is spiraling out of control. He's on adderol, doesn't sleep well, misses classes, isn't managing his life, and is failing 2 of his 5 classes. My wife and I are uncertain where to start since we don't live in the area. We're not prepared to bring him home since that will cause a lot of anger and resentment, which would impact his younger brother who has Asperger's Syndrome.

We're currently looking for a coach but not certain that is where to start. We are also not finding very many to choose from in the San Diego area.

Any suggestions?

Finding An ADHD Coach

An ADHD coach is a great idea. Hopefully, an experienced professional with a little bit of personal distance will be able to help your son get on track.

Have you checked the ADDitude Directory for an ADHD coach who specializes in higher education? You can search by ZIP code . . .

I hope this helps. Good luck!

a coach in San Diego

Yes, I checked the directory but didn't find anyone in the San Diego area. Right now I am relying on google searches on the web.

College

HI I tried to send you a response but it deleted itself. I have a daughter with ADHD she is a Freshman and being successful her first year of college. It's not been easy: first she had to have her meds adjusted, also on adderall has a lot of difficulty sleeping (it's part of the disease) However her psychiatrist recommended taking the medicine an hour before bed: it quiets the mind and lets you sleep. Makes sense. Also: she's committed and passionate about her studies. She wants to change the educational world for ADHD people. I would recommend finding a psychiatrist that is knowledgable about ADHD and the medications available etc. Also, if he's not taking fish oil and vitamin D these would be very helpful. You may also want to ask him what he drinks when he takes his adderall. Anything with citric acid will shut it off. Shockingly it is in a lot of beverages namely the diet sodas, juices etc. Good Luck. Kids without ADHD also struggle the first year of college.
