Is the Anxiety Primary or Secondary?
Hi jedikati:
I don't know if you saw the Spring issue of ADDitude, but there is a huge story inside about anxiety disorder and how it's often confused with ADHD. The trick is discerning whether the anxiety is Primary (meaning it is pervasive across your life, not just trigged by stressful situations) or Secondary (most likely triggered by the stress of living and working with ADD everyday). If it is Primary, then, Yes, you should talk your doctor about treating it with medication specifically for anxiety disorder. If it is secondary, then anxiety symptoms should improve with proper treatment of your ADHD.
Of course there is also the chance that you have both Primary ADHD and Primary Anxiety Disorder, but this is less common and something only your doctor can determine.
One way or another, I wouldn't stop taking your medication without talking it over with your doctor.
I hope this helps!
