Newly Diagnosed and Meds for 5 Year Old

I just picked up my son from school for attacking his teacher. He's in kindergarten and has been having a hard time with managing his behavior. He's been aggressive in the past, although it's generally toward his peers and centers around an incident. He was prescribed 5 mg of Adderall (extended release) yesterday and we started today. I got a call from school at 9:45 saying that he attacked his teacher during circle time and then his principle! On the way home he told me that he was frustrated and that his "brain was mad". I'm not giving him the meds tomorrow and I did call his doctor, waiting for a call back. I just wanted some advice about what to look for or anything really. I'm ready to pull my hair out, this year has been challenging for our son.

ADHD Meds for Kids

Hi designmom:

I'm so sorry to hear of your son's struggles with ADHD and with his medication - scary stuff for everyone. I would definitely recommend reading ADDitude's tremendously popular article Preschool-Age ADHD Children: Too Young for a Diagnosis? It talks about treatment options for preschoolers specifically.

I would also recommend Tweaking ADHD Treatments and Changing Medications When a Child's Behavior Worsens It's generally true that stimulants begin working within an hour, so it could be that your son's medication didn't agree with him. I would definitely recommend talking to his doctor as soon as you can!

And maybe you wand to download our free Alternative ADHD Treatment Report as well...

Best of luck!
