High School Accommodations

My daughter is a junior in high school. She has had an IEP since 4th grade, diagnosed with ADHD. Currently taking Vyvanese but continues to struggle with completing homework and handing it in. She has always been difficult to get up in the morning, but this year has been exceptionally worse.

The first semester she ended up dropping her first hour class because she was arriving so late and then missing teaching, etc. She would be so embarrassed when she arrived late that she would skip the class entirely. This semester they scheduled her for a resource class first hour. First, I don't see her punctuality for that first hour improving (7:15 a.m.) and second I am not entirely sold on resource class. She states that the resource class is for "stupid" kids and she does not want to be labeled as such. I know it is not for "stupid" kids, but of course that is the "high school" students' perception. So this appears to deflate her self-esteem even further.

My question is, is it unreasonable to request her first hour be open and her actual day at school would begin her second hour? My husband feels that I am teaching her a bad habit. Am I? Yes, she can get to a field trip leaving at 7:15 on time, but of course that is not every day and something of interest. Any feedback appreciated.

ADHD Accommodations

Hi there:

You raise a great question about accommodations. If a child can request a specific seat in the classroom or extra time on a test, it stands to reason that she can request a later start time because of her ADHD. I don't know for certain, as I've never heard of this specific accommodation.

But your husband may have a point... I understand that morning can be excruciating for many ADD kids. But I have to wonder: If the 'stupid' label of this resources class was so horrible, would that be motivation enough to get your daughter out the door?

I have gathered some resources that might help...
