Anxiety disorder symptions

My 9 year old daughter was diagnosed with adhd at age 5 and is very stable and doing very well in the 3rd grade. My daughter is on Daytrana patch 20 mgs. My question is about the symptioms of anxiety disorder- what are they??? For the past couple of years my daughter has become very frightened of things in (big) costumes... Mc Gruff the drug dog, school mascots, clowns, etc. I know several tipical kids and adults who are not so fond of clowns either, but this is differnet. YOu can see on my daughters face that she is scared beyond her ability to calm herself even though she knows logically these characters are just real people in costumes, she feels the need to get away. Even being positioned in a school gym on the complete opposite side is not far enough away. I suppose being afraid of things such as this is not life threatening, but she spends a good amount of time, say before a friends birthday party, being afraid that their may be a clown present. Forget a party at chucky cheese!! In addition to this, she is afraid of going anywhere downstairs in our home if someone is not down there also. She picks her nails, a spot on her face, leg intermittently... always having some kind of raw spot at any given time. Her adhd doctor says kids go through stages like this, (which I beleive) but how long is TOO LONG possibly suggesting something else. Her doctor has also suggested the possibility of an additional medication to help ease her anxiety, but my husband and I are resistent to add more meds unless really necessary. I guess i'm unsure of the tipping point??? I would appreciate any comments! :) Thanks!

Anxiety Disorder

My daughter is 7 and has ADHD. Like your daughter she was afraid of alot of normal things. I kept thinking it was just the ADHD until I talked with my Pediatrician about it. We had her evaluated and she ended up having an anxiety disorder as well. We are not an advocate of meds if not needed but we had to look at her quality of life and if we could make it better. She is taking Zoloft once a day and the change has been dramatic. She still has a few things she is uncomfortable with but over all it has been a choice we are thankful we made. It also helped her concentrate better at school. For the first time she will go outside and play with her sister and not stand at the door and watch. Her interaction with other children has improved as well. She is playing better on the playground. I never thought how overwelming the playground could be to a child with anxiety. Have your daughter evaluated and see if your concerns are valid and then you will be able to make the best plan for her.

Anxiety Disorder

My son is 8yrs. old & has ADHD. He also has an anxiety disorder. I think he has childhood agrophobia (sp?) I've read about it & the symptoms match. We go out to eat on Friday evenings. For the past year or so he's had panic attacks in the restaurants. His face will either turn red or pale & he insists that he's choking & has been very close to vomitting. Obviously, when he makes a scene we run out to the car while my husband finishes his meal. When asked what he's afraid of or why he doesn't like to go out, he says that it's "too loud". We've tried quieter restaurants both nothing has helped. I also feel that he has "sensory" issues. His sense of touch & taste seem to be heightened. Is anyone else going through this?? If so, what is the solution?? Please respond or e-mail me at: Valm66@sbcglobal.net Thanks, Valerie

Thanks!

Thanks to both who posted replies regarding anxiety disorder symptoms. I do agree I should talk to her doctor more in detail to discuss the reality of the severity of her anxiety. Regarding the sensory issues, my daughter also has some mild sensory issues and often complains of things being "too loud". I have started to carry child sized (and adult ones for me!) ear plugs which she uses often in a niosy school gym, the movies, etc. I wear them along with her and have come to also find the above areas more tollerable with them in while also helping my daughter not to feel so alone in needing them. :)

Earplugs..:)

My daughter lives fulltime with these and its just easier to go with the flow as in whatever works for her...its all relative as in who does it hurt? No one... Who does it bother? If anyone, its their problem not ours... Does it help my daughter? Yes...

For the lady with the original post.. My son is 13 and has ADHD and is OCD which is based in Anxiety.. I would really like you to research OCD - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and I'd like you to check into CBT therapy - Cognitive Behavior Therapy. There's generalized Anxiety and then specific, sounds like your daughter really needs help... I would see about meds in the immediate and then CBT/Anxiety to follow through until she can learn some technics to manage it. Good Luck!

Cheers Lisa
