504 Accommodations in Pre-AP Classes

Does anyone have any experience with getting accommodations in a Pre-AP class? My 12 year old ADHD son is on a 504 plan. He is in all regular classes except for math. His math class is a pre-AP class. He's a smart kid and capable of understanding the more difficult concepts. However, he can't handle the homework load because his meds have worn off by 6 PM. He typically spends up to 2 hours on math homework which leaves him little time or energy for the rest of his homework.

His math teacher told me that Pre-AP classes and 504 accommodations "don't go hand in hand". I think he is entitled to the same accommodations as he has in his regular classes. I'm trying to get his math homework modified to half of what she assigns to the rest of the class. We have a 504 meeting on Thursday to discuss this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Pre-AP Accommodations

Hello Brenda:

It's a common misconception that ADHD accommodations should be available only to children who are struggling academically and not enrolled in challenging courses like your son's. This is just not true - they should be available to all children who are impaired by their ADHD. The sad truth is that 504 plans are much harder to enforce than IEPs and that your son's school may have restrictions against pre-AP accommodations. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't fight to change those restrictions... Here is some information that might help:

I hope this helps!
