Graduate School / Dissertation

I am "attempting" to complete a Psy.D in Clinical Psych. With my own diagnosis of ADHD, I had not asked for any accomadations and managed with extra effort. However, I am having great difficulties completeing a case study dissertation. I had privately hired a coach & tutor for several weeks, however; finacially had to discon. I don't know where or what to ask for, but know my difficulties stem from organizational and long term planning struggles to complete this dissertation. I know this is so disheartening. Any advice?

dissertation

I really would recommend that you ask for some help. The problems you are describing are exactly why school assistance was set up in the first place. ADD in my opinion is analagous to needing to wear glasses. There is no shame in either ADD or poor eyesight and it is reasonable to treat both conditions.

I hope you are either taking a stimulant or have checked out alternative care such as ADD-care. You might also think of reading Healing ADD the Six Types by Dr. Amen. It is a great book. Good luck with the dissertation.

Ask for Accommodations

I agree that you should ask for some accommodations. This is why the system exists.

Have you been able to build a routine and stick to it? And try to control your stress levels by taking care of yourself. Stress won't make your task any easier.

Sandy Maynard, ADDitude Organization Expert, says that you should create systems that help you stay on task, like scheduling regular appointments with your professors -- they can help hold you accountable.

Good luck, Dena

ADAAA/ADHD

It's my understanding that ADHD now qualifies as an official disability, lending weight to accomodation requests under ADA and 504. You should take advantage of it.

Re:Grad School

Been there / Done That...

Step 1 - Every school has different procedures. Find out what paperwork is required to get registered with Disability Service at the school ASAP (I realize the OP is pretty old.) This may take awhile if there is bureaucracy involved.

Step 2 - Meet with the school disability counselor and get a plan, even before you think you need it.

Professors are human. Who are they more willing to help? (Oversimplified on how they may view things...) A - Someone that is registered with Disability Services, but tries not to use them at first. B - Someone that has organizational problems, then when problems start to compound, says, "Oh, by the way, I have a problem. Where is the Disability Services office?"
