In Your Experience, What Do You Think?

My son is 11. For the last few years he has been having trouble in school. He is very disorganized, loses things, can't remember assignments and tests, has trouble staying on task in the class room. He will do his class work, then "forget" to hand it in, or lose it in his locker. He also has low energy and motivation. He is by nature an introvert and seems to need to decompress after being with other kids. He is also an aural learner so he does well on tests but not on day to day work. A huge problem is noise. He is so sensitive to noises that many times he sits with his head on his desk to try and block out the girl sniffling beside him, or in church last week he was so agitated at the sound of people coughing that he was shaking and practically in tears. I am exactly the same way .We are reading about inattentive ADD and wonder if we both should be tested and consider medication. What advice can you give us?

In Your Experience, What do you think?

My son has the same problems, tho not so much with being sensitive to surrounding noise. He is 9-1/2 and is currently on Concerta - we are trying a 54mg dose this week to see if it makes any difference with being able to finish classwork etc, without being a zombie. So far so good, but I don't have a report from his teacher yet. I have heard fish oil supplements help, but finding one that isn't nasty tasting and HUGE(capsule) is difficult. I would like to try that however. I would like to see ALSO if someone has suggestions for the classwork, forgetfulness as well... Meanwhile, hang in there.........

In Your Experience...

Hi again...I should add my son was much like your son. He was diagnosed ADHD in 2nd grade and started on Concerta 18mg. We have had to adjust his meds dose due to growth spurts. There was a definite difference in him after starting him on meds, so please be open to that at least, esp with his sensitivities. My son's teacher has moved his desk location etc to reduce interference with other kids talking to him etc.. My point is, before I said CAN WE CHECK FOR THIS PLEASE, my son was having a horrible 2nd grade year not finishing work, talking, getting aggravated/frustrated easily.. Since then, we've had to adjust his dosage but it made a huge difference in his being able to function at school AND at home. I encourage you to have your son tested...alot of questions to answer from teachers etc -- but I know i have better piece of mind knowing he has a better chance to do the work he is capable of doing without his mind working tooooo fast. Watch articles here and everywhere..It helps to know how you should respond to him at frustrating times also........
