Accommodations for Twice Exceptional Son

We have a 504 meeting in a few days for my 13 yo son. He had a 504 that was sort of working when the teachers followed it. He has lots of executive center dysfunction issues, but is also gifted. At semester time they moved him up to 8th grade (from 7th), but wanted to suspend his 504 until they got to know him. I knew that meant he'd end up with late/lost/missing assignments. But, some of the time I just get tired of fighting. Of course once the work started being assigned he ends up with the missing assignments, in Dean Dining (punishment for missing gym clothes), and in school suspension (punishment for poor problem solving when he found someone had broken into his locker, he took his cell phone with him, therefore breaking the rule of no cell phones in school). So, I've pushed for the 504 to be reinstated. Now we have to have another meeting to decide the accommodations. Again. I want to encourage more independence and self control for managing his symptoms, but don't know what's appropriate to expect. He wants to go to MIT, and we won't be there to help him, so he has to learn to help himself. But where do I draw that line for what I and the teachers need to do for him, what do we accommodate, what is reasonable to expect, how do we start helping him help himself so that in 4 years (oh god!) he's ready for MIT or wherever?

Advocating for Better Accommodations

Wow, you are lucky to have a son that is doing so very well in school. He must be very special. It also sounds like you are working hard to make sure he gets the most out of his accommodations.

Here are a few suggestions to help you prepare for you 504 meeting:

Advocating for Your ADHD Child

Tips for Better Teacher Meetings and

Preparing ADHD Students for College, since you are already thinking ahead.

I hope this helps.

2e son

I was so glad to see a parent with some of the problems I have had. My son is 15yrs old and is also twice exceptional. He was diagnosed with ADD in 2nd grade. He has been evaluated in school and privately. He has struggled all through school with several problems. Writing, missing assignments, homework and the list goes on... He has a mild writing dysgraphia and many OCD tendencies. As of this year his IQ puts him a full 2 deviations above norm. His grades however in high school have always been average or below average due to missing homework/classwork. He avoids doing these as he finds it 'busy work" and boring. Our district is small and services are good, but we do not have a gifted program, honors classes, or any enrichement at all. My son has an IEP and many accomodations to help with all the negative problems, but nothing to aid in his "giftedness". Unfortunately , most teachers view him as lazy and oppositional. They are hesitant to diversify curriculum or to acess him in alternate ways. It is very frustrating and difficult when I know that he is soooo smart but he always feels like a failure because of his school grades. I have only one piece of advise, advocate, advocate advocate! My son is now finishing his 10th grade year and I am STILL fighting every day for him! Fortunately, I also work in his school so I am better equipped than most parents on how to go about things. I read many books on the subject, one really important one is "From emotions to advocacy" it was very helpful in helping me to understand the law and to organize my information to be more prepared for iEP meetings. I also subscribe to the 2e newsletter which is FULL of information on twice exceptional kids. Good luck! you are not alone!
