These days it would seem as if staying in the financial services industry could be problematic. If he is still employed, encourage him to research in earnest other areas that might interest him, possibly seeing a career counselor. This will help him assess whether or not there might be opportunities in a new area.
Though you dislike your job, I would hang onto it right now if you feel you can. Seniority counts when layoffs might be coming. Then, when he settles down you can consider a change, too.
