Granddaughter

Is it normal for an ADHD child to tell aduls what to do? Then she gets a additude when anyone corrects her. She will not admit when she is wrong because she doen't think she is ever wrong. I sometime think there is more wrong than just the ADHD. When she was younger she would fly in fits of uncontrollable rage. She bite a bus driver once. She had to be taken to ER once because no one at school could get her under control. That was all in elementery school. She was put on medication, I believe Ritlin, but I am not sure, as I don't have her all the time. She had been doing pretty good. In the last month she has had several outburst. She is staying with me this week to let her family have some rest from her outbursts. She will not stop talking when she is in one of these episodes. She will not do anything she is told. She use to retreat into a fetal postion and hide under things. She punched her stepmother in the stomach while she was pregnant. Any suggestions on helping her would be appreciated. Cindy

re: is it normal?

Some of the behaviors sound very typical ADHD: being bossy, not always keeping straight who is the kid and who is the adult, low frustration tolerance, and even temper tantrums. However, losing emotional control to the point of needing to go to the ER is a good sign that more is likely going on, as is the need for respite care. I would strongly encourage the family to find a good Child Psychiatrist and keep an appointment for at least a consultation. There are medications, support, and other treatments that can help your granddaughter and her family find a happier, less chaotic, lifestyle and routine.
