Anyone experience tics with psychostimulant meds?

Hi.

Our son was diagnosed with ADHD two years ago at the age of five. Since then we have tried many options including the Daytrana patch, Vyvanse and Strattera. With Daytrana and Vyvanse he was experiencing severe tics. Of course, the higher the dose the worse the tics became. After taking him off of the Daytrana and Vyvanse we have tried Strattera, which seems to take the "edge" off slightly but is not helping him much. He is still struggling to focus in school and has really been having a difficult time with impulsiveness. The Doctor wants to try a low dose of Focalin XR and see if he gets good symptom control and doesn't experience the tics that he tends to experience on other psychostimulants. We are really apprehensive and scared to try another psychostimulant on him because it is so very scary for him and us when he is having these side effects... not to mention that the typical side effects of sleeplessness and lack of appetite don't get better with time for him. And the tics that he developed while on Vyvanse have not completely subsided. We took him off of Vyvanse August of 2008. We are not necessarily pro-drug but we want to help him and if trying another med would lead to that then we are willing to do this. Has anyone else experienced these tics? If so, what have you found helps with this type of problem? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Tics and psychostimulants

My son also had tics with psychostimulants. We no longer use them. He is now on Stratera and because he hit the max dose and it still wasn't really hitting some of his impulsivity and frustration tolerance, our Child Psychiatrist added Tenex. We are getting fairly good response and no tics.

Tics are not unheard of with ADHD and psychostimulants can bring them out and/or make them worse in some people. I would be very hesitant to use any psychostimulant if they have triggered tics in the past. There are other choices out there for adjunct therapies.
