Let Me Know What You Think...

My father-in-law, husband, and 9 year old son have ADD (very classic cases, type 3 inattentive type). I have 2 things I would like your input on:

My 3 1/2 year old daughter is showing signs of future ADD, but who can be sure at that age? She is taking forever to fully potty train, in fact she is just now starting to get through the day without "accidents". What has been your experience with ADDer's and potty training? Her pediatrician was shocked when she wasn't potty trained at her 3 year visit. My son was late too, but I seem to remember him being less resistant.

Second, the 9 year old is on 18mg Strattera, which has been marginally effective in my opinion. This is his 2nd year, and prior to that his teachers were screaming for us to do something. He was really struggling with focus, attention to detail, staying on task, etc. I think the Strattera helps, but he can still be unfocused, poor detail, off task, etc...The latest news about ADD drugs causing hallucinations in kids scares his dad and I, and now we're questioning whether to stay on a med that doesn't seem to be a cure-all and may harm him. He can't take stimulants because of a family history of tic's. We're thinking of taking him off the Strattera and not telling the teacher, since we question whether she'll even notice.

Any thoughts? Thanks :-)

potty training and tics

Hi Mom of 2 ADHDers,

I don't think potty training is enough to go on, although your hunch may prove right in the end. I had mixed experiences with my 4 ADHD children. My first skipped the potty stage altogether - at 18 mths I took her to visit a friend of the same age who was the youngest of several children. This little girl went to the toilet on her own and my daughter watched with great interest. After that she used the toilet (assisted by a child's seat) and after a week of dry nappies overnight, I dispensed with them altogether. On the other hand, one child took almost 3 yrs. The other two were around average.

I have read that tics are no longer a contraindication for stimulants as stimulants are no longer thought to cause tics. You should ask your child's paediatrician for a second opinion or contact a local support group for more information about tics and perhaps the name of another doctor you could get a second opinion from.

Good luck with it.
