Is There a Problem?
My son is 9 years old and in 3rd grade--He does very well on his grades in school. All A's in conduct and A's and B's in his grades. I just feel like there is a problem and can't put my finger on it. It takes him FOREVER to get his work done. Everyday he stays in from playtime --he just will not (or cannot get it done) I get him to school early every morning and all playtime is being taken and still can't finish it- He does fine on his grades but it is like he is struggling so. If you are asking him the questions there is no problem but when it gets to reading them -- then there is your problem-- its like he gets so overwhelmed. If you give him a paper with lets say 50 problems on it it just freaks him out. Now if you give him 5 papers with 10 problems on each it would be not problem--chapter books --oh my that really sends him over the edge-- he is convinced he cannot read a chapter book. Everything has to be so scheduled for him. If not it is just confusion. His teachers keep saying it will come-- I don't think so. I really feel it is and underling issue here- but i don't know what. As a parent you want to help your child. But what do you do. He is very shy and timid most of the time. That is until he gets in his comfort zone. any suggestions???

Getting an Evaluation
Hello Teresa, It sounds like your son is doing well in school. The teacher may be right that your son just learns differently and all this is part of his personality and it will come. Every kid is different and sometimes it just takes time and patience. If you are truly concerned that there is a problem you could get him evaluated by a mental health professional. That may provide you with the peace of mind of knowing whether there is some kind of learning disability or if your son is just being himself. It may be helpful to determine your son's learning style so you and the teachers can play to his strengths. Good luck, Dena |
