Accepting ADD & Now Medicine Side Effects?

Weight Loss and Loss of Appetite

Hi all. I am struggling right now with what to do with my 8 yo daughter and her medication. She has struggled with school since she started. She is not what I would classify a hyper kid, just can not stay on task! I have been very pessimistic about the whole ADD diagnosis from the onset.

Well two years later and quite a few doctors visits I agree she has some attention issues that are not readily within her control. With that said we started on a regiment of 10mg of Ritalin once a day about 3 months ago. In that said time she lost 6 pounds (she is 5'2" and only 60 pounds to begin with). The teachers noticed a huge improvement with her focus as soon as she started taking it. However due to the weight loss we took her off from the drug as she really was looking unhealthy! Now she is off it, gaining almost all of her weight back in about 2 weeks, but with that the teachers (as have I) noticed a change back to her lack of focus once we took her off from it.

Please help, any other suggestions, other meds, alternative treatments???? Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

ADHD Meds: Side Effects for Kids

Hi Cory:

Loss of appetite is a common side effect for children taking ADHD medication. However, it is quite possible to find an alternative med without any side effects - it's not an all or nothing deal, you can have the benefits of ADD meds without the weight loss. It's just a matter of finding the right medication.

Here is some advice for trying a new medication due to side effects.

I would also recommend downloading this free report on alternative ADHD treatments that might supplement the ADHD medication. You could try many of these things right away.

I hope this helps!

Weight loss

My son was put on stimulants and lost weight he's 6 1/2 so he's a small fry to begin with! We have changed some of our habits around meals. we have supper later so that the meds are wearing off or out of his system. We give him choices of healthy foods and usually if he has some control he'll eat it. Ensure/Boost with Protein or high calories we make him drink at least one bottle of day. Vitamins in the am. We give him breakfast then his meds letting him eat as much as possible. We pack his lunch and involve him in it so that he's more likely to eat it and I can monitor it a bit better. Also, we saw a nutritionist which helped give us some other choices too...yogurt is great has protein in it. Bedtime snack too with milk (we went back to whole milk for the calories but soy milk is great). Hope this helps!
