Weight Loss and Medication

Weight Loss and Loss of Appetite Hi all. I am struggling right now with what to do with my 8 yo daughter and her medication. She has struggled with school since she started. She is not what I would classify a hyper kid, just can not stay on taks! I have been very pessimistic about the whole ADD diagnosis from the onset. Well two years later and quite a few doctors visits I agree she has some attention issues that are not readily within her control. With that said we started on a regiment of 10mg of Ritalin once a day about 3 months ago. In that said time she lost 6 pounds (she is 52" and only 60 pounds to begin with). The teachers noticed a huge improvement with her focus as soon as she started taking it. However due to the weight loss we took her off from the drug as she really was looking unhealthy! Now she is off it, gaining almost all of her weight back in about 2 weeks, but with that the teachers (as have I) noticed a change back to her lack of focus once we took her off from it.

Please help, any other suggestions, other meds, alternative treatments???? Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

weight loss

Hi, I too had a problem with my son (8) losing weight at first. When I talked to his dr. about the problem, he lowered his dosage. That did seem to help. I also incorporated more fats in his diet. I switched from skim milk to 2%, added peanuts, dairy (ice cream, chocolate milk, colby cheese) and higher levels of lean protein (shaved turkey and chicken breast) he would just eat them out of the container. I don't know if this could help your daughter, but I thought I would share. Good luck!

Weight Loss

Hi, I also have an 8 yr old son. He has always been small for his age, but he's been on different meds since the age of 3. Right now he only weighs about 40 lbs. We also make sure to give him extra protein, peanut butter toast is one of his favorite snacks. When we notice him not eating as much, or he seems to be losing weight, we give him pediasure shakes. He seems to do really well with these.

Too Much Weight Loss

My 6 year old grandson started taking Concerta, 36 mg, around six months ago. It has helped him a lot. His school grades went from poor to great. The problem is weight loss. He has loss over 18 pounds and we don’t know what to do. He is a picky eater to start with and with his loss of appetite he won’t even eat his favorite foods. We are at the point that we may take him off Concerta all together. ADHD behavior is difficult to put up with but it would be better that a sick child who is wasting away. I’d appreciate any comments that may help.
