Increased Irritability and Sadness

I have a 13 year old son who was diagnosed with add over 5 years ago. He is also dyslexic. about 6 weeks ago he started using the daytrana patch. This is his first experience with medications. His appetite is severely affected and he is already skinny so he needs as much food as possible. He is generally a mellow and well behaved child and since starting the medicine he has been more irritable, defiant and at times sad. He told me that he can concentrate a lot better in school (and his grades are a good indication of that) but other than that he feels terrible.

he told me this morning that the medication makes him feel like he wants to cry. i need some advice. My son has a horrible time taking pills since he has never had to for anything else. What other medications work well? Any tricks for getting him to take pills if there is a better alternative that requires swallowing? any and all suggestions would be appreciated

Daytrana Patch

Hi sugarbell:

I'm so sorry to hear about your son's complications with the Daytrana patch. I know that some children develop irritability and anger if the dosage is to high for them -- this is true with all methylphenidates (Ritalin, Methylin, Metadate are also methylpehnidates).

I would suggest talking to your son's doctor and trying to lower the dosage (though I'd be surprised if he started your son at a high dosage to begin). If this is not the problem, I would ask about trying another stimulant like Adderall or Dexedrine, which have a different composition and therefore might not have the same side effects.

And here is a good suggestion for kids who have trouble swallowing pills.

Good luck!
