Out of Control 8-Year-Old

I am a parent of an 8 year old boy who has been diagnosed with ADHD about two years ago. When we found out, the pediatrician had him on Focalin 20 mg and that helped a great deal. He was in the 2nd grade then. He was on Principals List and I have to say that since he got in the 3rd grade, it has been a nightmare. I have changed his medication and he is now on concerta 36 mg. For some reason, that does not seem to be working. I am about ready to change the medication again, because I have been getting calls from his teacher and he gets in trouble every day. Help, frustrated parent.

Out of Control Son

I couldn't help but think of our ADHD Parenting Blogger, Kay Marner. She has been writing about her struggle with finding the right medication for her ADHD daughter. She faces many of the same struggles and has gone through a lot of trial and error.

See this list of questions to ask your doctor about treating ADHD with medication. Hopefully this will help you outline a game plan as you try different medications.

Also, check out this article about School Behavior Strategies. Talk with his teacher about setting up classroom rules and consequences for breaking the rules. And discuss a reward system for positive behavior.

Best, Dena

re:out of control

hi, i'm diagnosed with ADHD, and i also had bad reactions to amphetamines, (vyvanse, adderall) I would still be hyperactive, and sometimes even crazy (yes, like insane), and at night i had terrible depression from the crash. I decided to make the switch to this supplement called ADD Care, it's all natural (no drugs involved) and it still helps focus as much, if not more than any other stimulant. I'm definately glad that I no longer deal with those old side effects, I would look into this.
