Need Help with Medication.....

Hi, I am new to this. My 8 year old son was diagnosed with autism at age 2 and more recently with ADHD @ age 6. We have tried the stimulants and they worked wonders for the first 6 months, then the tics started and they were very bad. We then tried a different stimulant with no more success and more tics. We recently and are still trying strattera. The teacher stated that he was so tired and so unfocused. I switched the meds to night and he falls asleep after an hour, but he is still unable to focus at school. We have been on the Strattera for about 6 weeks and still no big improvement like we saw on the stimulants. His doctor wants us to see a psychiatrist to try different meds. Any ideas for something else to try? His behaviors are totally under control, he just can't get the focus down. Thank you for any feedback.

Hi,

I am also new to this website. I also have an 8 year old son who is ADHD. I just started him on medication back in November 08. His Pediatrician started him on Ritalin 20mg daily in the morning before school. So far, I have gotten positve feedback from all his teachers. He had a lot of issues w/trying to focus in school, etc. This medication seems to be working for him, thus far. I have never seen a Psychiatrist though? The problem I am facing is that he weans off of the meds by homework time, which becomes a nightmare w/him acting out again! I was hesitate to put him on the medication, though am glad I did since I have been told it is def an improvement for him; but, I still have a lot of other issues w/him that I am dealing with?

It sounds for your son, it is a trial & error. If you see that the Strattera is not working, I would take him off till you find something that does? It also seems that the meds is making him tired. I don't think giving it to him at night would help w/his school during the day because it seems to me that by then he is weaning off of it. Good thing is about his behavior that you stated is under control; that is one thing I am struggling with.
