It Can Work!

Thought I'd put in a positive thread.

My daughter is now in 10th grade, has been diagnosed for almost 2 years now, but we have not been able to find a good med for her yet. Instead of going through more options, she decided if she made it this far she'd keep trying, even w/o accommodations where possible. We have worked on many different strategies and possible accommodations she can ask for when needed. She has talked with some of her teachers even w/o an IEP and has gotten the extra time and special seating etc she has asked for every single time - with positive results.

(To clarify she has no LD and has always pulled off good grades, but only with much frustration. She has always felt that things take her 2 to 3 times more time to finish than her peers (serious distraction issues), and no matter how she tried to "get organized" she was always panicking at the last minute to get things done, and she would often lose her papers and have to redo everything anyway. Since middle school she has needed to have friends tell her every assignment given verbally and remind her of almost every deadline. It's been frustrating and humiliating. )

I digress. The good part - last week she went up to a teacher privately and asked for some extra time on an assignment that was due the next day. He granted it. 10 minutes later he addressed the entire class and gave the whole class the extra time as well. The students were all happy and my daughter felt not only proud of herself for knowing when to ask, but she almost felt normal - aware that others can use more time from time to time too.

Moral of the story - finding what we need and asking for it seems to be the way to get things done!
