Dealing with ADHD In a Crowded, Noisy Work Environment

HI, I have been diagnosed with ADHD for about 15 yrs as well as a learning disability. I am the new Special Ed Resource Room teacher at a very new charter school in an urban setting. I have difficulty simply getting work done at my own desk, mainly because i share my office with the nurse, social worker, and Vice principal.

We have high ceilings in a big open room, and i'm not allowed to order dividers. Right now we are in the middle of construction so my room is often a hangout/lunch room/computer room for other staff members on their lunch breaks. I love my job, my students, my co-workers, but the noise is getting crazy.

I have tried ear plugs, vitamins, I even take straterra every day (which does help) but there are constant conversations that I want to be a part of and I cannot get my work done at the same time. I have no other place to go in the building, with 30 staff members and 200 students I am ready to scream. HELP!!!

ADHD & Distractions

Hello Frustrated:

That does sound like a challenging work place - hard for anyone, much less someone with ADHD for whom concentration is difficult enough without all the added distractions. Here is a good article about focusing better at work with tips that include:

- Arriving early or staying late each day (working out flexible work hours with your boss) so that you can take care of high-concentration work without anyone else around.

- Wearing big headphones (even if no music is playing) while working to signal to others that you shouldn't be disturbed.

- Posting a sign on the back of your chair that asks others to come back in 15 minutes - you're trying to finish something right now.

I hope this helps! Let us know if you stumble upon any good solutions...
