Does anyone know of cookbooks that deal with ADHD? I often refer to the Diadetic Cookbooks but I was wandering if there were any out there specifically for ADHD?

Nutrition and ADHD

Hi Momof5,

I don't know of any cookbooks but research has shown that diet does not affect ADHD. There may be a small subset of children who are allergic to certain foods and therefore, it may exacerbate some symptoms because of the allergy. But diet has not been shown to affect ADHD in any scientific studies. Not that nutrition isn't important and improving your family's diet is an excellent goal. The only substance that may mildly improve some symptoms is the Omega 3 fish oil. We all take that since we don't eat much fish and it's also great for your heart and cholesterol. I haven't noticed any difference in my ADHD since using the Omega 3 but there are a number of good reasons to take the supplement so I do take it.

ADHD and Diet

Hello there:

I haven't run across any ADHD-specific cookbooks either, but I would recommend checking out Healthy Mother, Healthy Child, which is a book about nutrition, exercise and yoga for ADHD kids and their moms.

ADDitude also has a collection of articles all about how nutrition impacts ADHD that might help.

Best of luck!

I just bought a book that seems to be very interesting. It is called "The ADD and ADHD Cure" (A Complete Nutritional and Lifestyle Program) The Natural Way to Treat Hyperactivity and Refocus your Child. The authors are Jay Gordon, M.D. with Jennifer Chang. It does have recipes. Hope it helps.

Nutrition and ADHD

Its so wonderful that your thinking ahead about nutrition ! I've come across more and more studies that reflect mal-nourishment can cause mental disorders & diseases. I know many may think, if its that easy why are disease and disorders so rampant ? Well, thats simple, our foods do not contain the right nutrients or enough of the right nutrients. One nutrient that is hard to absorb through foods is B12. And apprantley, B12 deficiency is now linked to mental illnesses. The lack of B12 appears to decrease levels of substance needed to transmit nerve signals. Thank God a team of scientist discovered this, I hope it will one day lead to a vaccination against ADD and other debilitating conditions. I recently posted an article about B12 and ADHD: I also have more articles on holistic healing http://www.ideamarketers.com/?The_ADHD/B-12_connectiona_closer_look&articleid=688924&from=PROFILE

Thank u!

LOOKING FOR A GROCERY LIST

Has anyone come across a comprehensive list of foods (name, brand) that are lower in preservatives. for example: brand a cereal does not have high fructose corn syrup but brand b does. I know the Feingold book has this I believe if you join the association but I just want a good comprehinsive list that would help make better choices for my ADHD daughter. I have done much research on the internet and have yet to find a good list. Can anybody steer me in the right direction

Breakfast

I've tried various supplements and foods but haven't found any that make a significant difference. The most significant diet improvement I made was to eat a good breakfast containing protein each morning.

I have also read recent articles suggesting that reducing sugar is helpful with memory but the studies I read were small and preliminary.

good luck

I always believed the scientific evidence that diet does not impact ADHD symptoms in my child.

It was too hard to do and too expensive to buy all the gluten free food. My daughter thrived on simple carbs. Even switching her to whole wheat carbs proved no difference. But then I made the decision to stop listening to all the talk and try the Feingold diet on my daughter. There are improvements that have certainly lowered her level of ADHD symptoms. . When she has certain foods, she is more impulsive and argumentative and back talks much more. It was amazing to me that a few chocolate chip cookies could produce such changes in her for 4 days now. She calming down again. She only had 3 cookies too. There is some connection to their symptoms and their diet. In 30 more days I will start to reintroduce the foods to see how she reacts to dairy, colorings, and preservatives, as well as gluten again.

Try different things. Look for recipes on line that are gluten free. My daughter diet consist of no artificial colorings or flavorings, preservatives, gluten and dairy. No yellow corn also. We watch her sugar intake after 5 p.m. I have found sugar at night, such as her nightly ice cream if though it is soy ice cream, was causing her to wake up during the night vs. sleeping through the night.

Good luck on your journey....
