A Break from Medication: Concerta

I need advice because i want to know if it is truth that having breaks on ADHD medication like during weekends or holidays even school breaks can cause in a while to increase the dose because the brain gets confused and it will need more of the medication.

Medication breaks

Hi Paulina,

I have never heard that before. I've read a lot of books on ADHD, including scientific research, and I've attended two support groups for a few years and I've never run across that. My son took Concerta for over four years and he did not take the medication on weekends or holidays and he never had that problem. My adult daughter took Concerta for a while also and she never had that problem either.

Over time the dosage need may change esp. as children grow, more is expected from them or they become teenagers, etc. And with females, hormones, puberty, PMS, etc. can affect the effectiveness of the medication. Taking medication with orange juice or foods with citric acid can reduce the effectiveness of Concerta and some meds need to be taken with food, some with a lo-fat meal, etc. to assure the most effectiveness. My sister is a pharmacist and we've discussed the medications and again, I've never heard any mention of what you are referring to.

I've never heard of that explanation, but I have heard that it is not uncommon for the meds to be increased, especially as a child grows up. Most meds for children are based on their weight. As a child grows, the meds are less effective.

However, as to breaks, a friend who has a son who has ADHD (I have it - which is how I found out about her son), and she told me that taking meds on weekends was a matter of consistency for the son, but also would give her a break on weekends because he would be more focused, and less likely to be inattentive or as hyper (and on the go) as he would be without the meds. Apparently, it has been very trying for her when he was off his meds on the weekends.
