School Won't Hold Back or Give Services to My 7-Year-Old

My cowboy was diagnosed in August of 2006 with ADHD by a clinical Psychologist. He has stuttered on and off for 5 years and sometimes it is horrible sometimes not. He is also off the wall. Riding our horses and doing rodeo seems to be his no stutter and focus place. Since Kindergarten I have asked to hold him back not only was he behind academically but also socially and he started at age 4. Since then (he is in 2nd grade now) Every year I have tried and fought. He is falling further behind in all area's. I don't know what my rights are as a parent in California. I know that he will do great things with his life and I really was hoping that would involve education, but he doesn't like school right now he says "it is so hard" I don't know what to do. He is on the Daytrana patch 10mg and bounces between grerat days and horrible. I put the patch on at 4:00 AM . Any suggestions?

school services

Keep pushing for services for your child. My almost 7 year old was kicked out of preschool (public preschool) and the special ed Pre-K, for "bad behavior". These people are inept to dealing with ADD/ODD children. He finally started 1st grade this year. They started him at only a few hours a day. I had to get a lawyer ( which was a waste of time and money). The best thing that ever happened was to file a "due process request" AND we got an advocate through Equip for Equality. They are wonderful. He has a one on one aide and is doing well so far in school. You have to push the school district. Call the superintendent, call the special ed director....keep on their case. He needs those services. If you can get a specific diagnosis and have your doctor explain in writing what your child will need to succeed whether it be OT, Speech therapy, social work etc, they should provide that in school!!! Good Luck and keep pushing and praying!!! It does work! Check out the IEP/school section of this website there are great ideas there also. Request and IEP evaluation>

ADHD Accommodations

Hello cowgirl:

Welcome to the ADDitude forums and thank you for your post. Federal law requires public school to provide educational accommodations for children diagnosed with ADHD or other learning disabilities. Sometimes you just have to fight for them!

As a first step, I would recommend downloading a few of ADDitude's free Printables about ADHD accommodations: A Parent's Guide to ADHD School Accommodations, 9 Ways to Achieve Success at School, and Classroom Accommodations to Help ADHD Children.

These should give you the ammunition you need to get started. ADDitude's articles about your legal rights with ADHD could also help.

Best of luck! And let us know what happens...
