Praxis 1 Exam, Reading and ADD

Hello there,

I am about to take the PRAXIS 1 EXAM, (or at least I am trying to prepare for it.) When it comes to reading, I tend to get bogged down in details, try to understand everything I am reading. These questions are dense with information , so I have to able to get the main idea and answer the questions correctly.

Has anyone been through the PRAXIS 1 EXAM and had the same problems? Can anybody tell me where I can go for advice? Thanks! Hope to hear from someone soon!

Sincerely,

TJArted68

Reading on an Exam

I've never taken the exam so I don't know if i can be of any help. One thing that I tended to do on a standardized test was to read the questions and look for the answer instead of reading the whole passage first. That way I didn't have to keep everything I read in mind. Otherwise it took too long for all the information to sink in. And do the easiest questions first. So the main point of the reading passage might be the last question I answer. Again, I am talking about a multiple choice question not an essay type. I don't know anything about that type of exam.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Elaine

praxis prep

I took the Praxis II, but I don't remember studying much for it. I did skim through a guide just to get a feel for how the test would be laid out. There are a lot of helpful links at ets.org. I also used the accommodations allowed by my university, but you must sign up for pre-approval through ETS or your test center. Someone (MD or PhD) will need to give proof that you need any accommodations. If you need help with this, ask your university's counseling office. With my adult ADD, taking the test in a small room, without the distractions of 100 other people taking the test, was tremendously helpful. Though the extra time mostly helped me relax, use any extra time to re-read the questions, and your answers. Make sure you fully answer the questions asked, and that your answer makes sense (conventions, wording, fluid ideas). Good luck, I'm sure you'll do fine.

other help

You can also get some help from your university's Disability Support Services office, if needed.

test accomodations

Even after getting approval for accommodations on one test, you must get pre-approved for EVERY test you take, even if they're from the same company (ETS).

Test

If I remember right this test is for education right? I remember the first time I took the test I did not pass it. This made me feel like I am not capable of being a teacher. I later got a business degree, the non traditional route( I like because no test more based on papers, and projects) I decided I wanted to become a teacher so I retook the test but I did it online and it was easier. This might be an option for you. Good luck
