Very Worried

My son is 10 and in 5th grade. He has been on various medications since 2nd grade. He weights only 58 lbs. and is about 49 inches. He is the smallest child in his grade. His sister is 6 and catching up to him fast. This is causing him self esteem issues. I have spoken to the physician regarding this and they keep telling me thin is better than obese. My son is on Atterall 30 mg. He does average in school and doesn't cause to many issues. He has played all sports, soccer, baseball, wrestling, golf. He never stays with anything, even if he does well. He would play XBOX all day/night if I let him. It seems as if he wants to be by himself all the time and we have to force him into family activies. He gets very emotional over very small issues and I feel terrible for him. We have tried not medicating him over part of the summer and he is bouncing off the walls and can't concentrate. If my husband comes down on him really hard, we get some response, but it is limited. He will just blurt thing out and thinks everything is funny, like uncontrolable laughter. I am worried he is becoming depressed and I just want to help him.

Adhd medication - concerta

It sounds like you are writing about my son. the emotions, the funny stuff, the loner attidue. Word for word. except he is the tallest in his class. He is now on Concerta and I make sure he eats a healthy breakfast in the morning before he gets the medicine. On other medications, his stomach hurt and he lost weight. He also has a healthy snack before bed ( he seems really hungry at this time) usually a bowl of special k or wheeties. Christmas break has thrown us for a loop but Once we get back on schedule, this medication really has changed him. Do you have any advice how to get your child to fall asleep? Pat

Sleeping

I give my son melatonen 6 mg about 30 minutes before bedtime on school nights. It is a natural sleep aid. I did not want to give him anything stronger. It seems to help.

Staying asleep

My 15 year old can get to sleep with melatonin, but keeps waking up during the night. Any suggestions? He takes Vyvanse during the day, but has had a sleeping problem which pre-dated the medication. We also had to take away his computer due to the war game "addiction". He has now become addicted to cigarettes (self medication, as nicotine is a powerful stimulant), and cigarettes are also something to fidget with! His oppositionality has gone through the roof with the onset of puberty.

Response to Very Worried

I have a 13 year old that used to be on Adderall (30 mg). He was on it for maybe a year before I started noticing him withdrawl from me and showing signs of what I call psychosis. He started talking about hanging himself with a rope or cutting himself with staples to his friends but not me. I was fortunate enough that his friend's school counselor contacted my son's school counselor regarding his comments. He was only 10 at the time. I immediately called his neurologist in TEARS! I demanded that we try something else because I was not going to lose my child!

My suggestion to you is to try a different medication. My son did well with Focalin XR but after about 1 1/2 years on this medication, his body was metabolizing the medication too quickly so his neurologist put him on Dytrana 30mg patches. These worked great but he's now outgrown the 30 mg. He just started with Vyvanse 40 mg.

My son too would play video games or play on the computer all day if I would allow it. I would first attempt the medication before trying to change anything else. As far as your husband coming down hard on him, it's not going to help. It will only hurt his self-esteem because he can't help this. Oh I know how hard it is to not get upset but I've been going through this for almost six years and have learned a few lessons here and there. I still have to bite my lip and stop and think about things so I don't get upset - not an easy thing to do.

Pulling away

It is so hard to tell what is age appropriate and what is ADHD and the medication. Sometimes he is so soft hearted and I find him crying for no apparent physician reason. He will explain he is scared to die and talks about death and questions heaven and after life. I would like to think these are typical issues children contiplate as the realization of death becomes a reality and with the recent passing of his grandmother. I don't want to be to passive on something like this either. My other concern is he is just not growing or gaining weight. He looks gaunt from the medicine and I've had the school nurse contact me on several occasions that Pierce refused to eat anything at lunch.

very worried

My son has been onStraterra since 1st grade. He is now in the 5th grade. It seems to work well and is non narcotic which is very important to me. My son excells in just about everything he does, baseball 4-h, junior bible quiz and basketball.. It doesn't come easy though. He is a A /b HONOR STUDENT . None of this would be possible if we did not use the strattera and he takes a 2.5 mg of focalin at lunch.. His pedeitrician came up with this cocktail. He isn not perfect, but it does help. I even order his meds from the south pacific to cut down on cost. I struggle daily with his ADHD I seem to understand it better than my husband does. I constantlly am doing research reading uplifting articles on the subject just to keep from going crazy. I am christian so I pray every day Bless........ physically spiritally and emotionally. I am determined that with Gods help my child will do well in life...Melinda

Sound familiar

My daughter has been on meds now for three years. We finally had to up her dose this year because her metabolism was working through the meds too quickly and it was starting to effect her schooling again. She is in the 5th grade and will be 11 February. She only weighs 54 lbs and is 4'2". She is very small and petite. Her brother who is 6 months younger is 5'3", and 115lbs. I wasn't worried for a while because I was petite myself growing up but she had only gained 4 lbs in 8 months. She has always been active and we keep our kids active in a sport or acitivity 90% of the time. She has gotten really interested in gymnastics the past year and has worked really hard at it. I've been concerned about her intake of food and calories keeping up with her life style, we've recently started having her drink and ensure with breakfast and sometimes with lunch just to get the calories her body needs. It seems to have helped some with her energy not wearing out.

I read your post regarding buying your child's medication from the south pacific. I work in the pharmaceutical industry and I am very concerned about that- they do not have the strick oversight of their manufacturing facilities and I would be very concerned about about. There are many problems with that- PLEASE be careful!!! If it is the cost that makes you buy from there- are you aware their medication is completely covered by medicare- all you have to do is fill out the paperwork- it does not matter how much you make all children (as long as they have a diagnosis of ADHD/ADD, etc) fall under the disabilities act. Contact your local medicare dept and they will talk you through it. I also received free- yes free wrap around services with medicare! I have therapist come to my house and go to my childs school - it has helped sooo much!! It took another parent to let me know about this little known secret- oh also their cold medication, vitamins , etc are also covered. Hope this helps you. Oh- by the way at first they did not want to pay for the daytrauna- all my dr had to do was write that nothing else helped him.
