Response to Very Worried
I have a 13 year old that used to be on Adderall (30 mg). He was on it for maybe a year before I started noticing him withdrawl from me and showing signs of what I call psychosis. He started talking about hanging himself with a rope or cutting himself with staples to his friends but not me. I was fortunate enough that his friend's school counselor contacted my son's school counselor regarding his comments. He was only 10 at the time. I immediately called his neurologist in TEARS! I demanded that we try something else because I was not going to lose my child!
My suggestion to you is to try a different medication. My son did well with Focalin XR but after about 1 1/2 years on this medication, his body was metabolizing the medication too quickly so his neurologist put him on Dytrana 30mg patches. These worked great but he's now outgrown the 30 mg. He just started with Vyvanse 40 mg.
My son too would play video games or play on the computer all day if I would allow it. I would first attempt the medication before trying to change anything else. As far as your husband coming down hard on him, it's not going to help. It will only hurt his self-esteem because he can't help this. Oh I know how hard it is to not get upset but I've been going through this for almost six years and have learned a few lessons here and there. I still have to bite my lip and stop and think about things so I don't get upset - not an easy thing to do.
