Advanced Diploma in High School, But Can't 'Cut It' In College!

My daughter (18) graduated w/ an Advanced Studies Diploma in lieu of the fact she was in IEP last three years of high school and thru a tutor managed to even pass Chemistry. I am SO PROUD. She even got a scholarship to our local college. She works full-time in a pediatric physicians office and excels in this clerical position. She tried attending night courses and took 4 classes in general studies. Within 3 classes of computer science, she dropped it because she felt it was "so over her head" and "everyone else was getting it but her".

She continued with English / History / College Prep Success Course. She hasn't gotten her grades yet, but she did NOT enroll for the next semester because she feels she's "too dumb" to be in college. She feels "my mind is racing constantly, and I can't even tell you what it is I'm thinking about, it's so many things" - she can't focus enough.

She takes Concerta and has since she was about 16. I don't know how to help her. She has always been a magnet for "problem" people who need help (i.e. dysfunctional family, drug users, etc...) who all come to her for advice -- this has been on-going since elementary school. I don't know how to help her, I know she had big goals and dreams, and now the road is too foggy. Any advice will greatly be appreciated. Thank you.

ADHD in College

Hello Believe:

Thank you for your post. Your daughter sounds incredibly bright and motivated - just struggling to get the focus she needs to excel in college. First, I would recommend checking out ADDitude's Guide to ADHD in College, which is brimming with study and organization tips. She needs to know she's not dumb - she just learns a little differently, and accommodations in college could help...

It's also possible that college is not the right answer for your daughter right now. Maybe she would be happier working for few years, building up her confidence and then going to college when she has enough savings to take some time off from work to concentrate on studying...

It sounds like she's succeeding in the working world and that is so important - her experience now could help her find a long-term career path down the road.

Best of luck to both of you!

Mom, college student here as well

Please read my profile. I have a twin brother, he is about to finish his 4 year degree when I am going to finish my 2 year degree. Ive been on concerta since high school. I am so motivated, sports, life, etc.

I am my local community college, and some of the classes were over my head. THIS IS NORMAL!! This will be one big test for her. I know it was for me.

Go to you guidance counciler and they will tell you the good and bad teachers, which courses are hard and easy. Her guidance counciler could be the answer you are looking for. My guidance counciler has been the reason I am going to graduate. He will make sure I am getting good grades and help me pick the teachers and courses that wont be a waste of time.

Please, any questions, I am so glad to help, I know how she feels. If all goes well, I can let my mom talk to you through email. You want to talk about hard times!!! she should be an ADHD doctor!

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply! I haven't told my daughter I found this site yet, but when she comes home tonight, I will. I am hoping she can get feedback from other people and embrace the challenges to get where she wants to be in life.
