ADHD Later in Life

Hi there:

I'm not familiar with any studies into adults with ADHD, but ADDitude does have a slew of good articles about diagnosing and treating ADD later in life...

I Guess I am considered a older adult

I am over 50 and wasn't diagnosed until I was in my 40's. I just knew I was different from my friends and thought and could be very inattentive or impulsive. It wasn't until my cousin who has a ADHD son saw my husband yelling at me again because in his words I acted not my age more like a teenager/ I frankly found being on Ritalin LA and Welbutrin the medication combination make the boring things in life more tolerable. It still doesn't make it easier to clean up or pay the bills ontime.. I am lucky to have a IQ higher than 130 so it may be also that Being this smart makes convential things very tetadious (can't spell it )I JUST WORKED 20 HOURS SO i HAVE A HARD TIME SPELLING ANYTHING RIGHT NOW It is advised if you have a problem with things that are long term not related to aging it maybe to your advantage to start meds; but if you have high blood pressure or cardiac problems stimulants may not be advised. I don't have any of these problems so the meds I can use. There are 6 different types of ADD/ ADHD so you may want to read about them before deciding if medication is the right course for you. It also may be to advantage to read the gifted child who may be so bored with the schools and things so they have many problems the ADHD child has. Many doctors don't realize gifted people show many of the same symptoms such as underachievemnt , anger ,, frustration , high energy non-conforming stubborn low interest in details and begin and start new project before the first is finished. Many have problems with reading or spelling, My biggest problem is MATH and had a tutor who quit in an hour after I asked him questions such as if imaginary number why did I need to know (I was 45) So before you start meds make sure you are really ADHD
