Help with Homework

My 11-yo son won't do his homework. He is ADHD/ODD. I have a flexible schedule and when I'm on nights I don't see my son. Therefore can't get it done. My husband works third shift and goes to school full-time during the day and is no help whatsoever.

My son leaves his homework at school. Because they have no planner, he doesn't always bring home a homework sheet. When asked he says, I did it at school, which usually means he did it the next day or the day it was due and of course, it is sloppy and not good. On the days that we don't have homework issues, he's getting suspended for disrespectful behavior.

The teacher refuses to email me even after I have provided my email. Last year, I was told that it was not the teacher's job to email me. It was the responsibility of the student to write down the information. When I pointed out that they had removed me from the parent/teacher loop by refusing to do this, the teachers changed their mind and decided to have Mitchell write in his homework folder and they would initial it. The school is doing more this year then they have before but I want to meet them halfway but they wait until the next day to contact me and by then, it's too late.

ADHD Homework Help

Hi there:

I totally understand your frustration. You want your son to succeed - you can't be there to make sure he has all the tools and help he needs to do that, and the school's not making it easy for you. First, does your son have an IEP or 504 Plan? If not, I would recommend setting up school accommodations that specify a homework routine for your son.

For example, provide time each day in class for copying down homework assignments in a notebook and then require the teacher to double-check the notebook and books/papers packed for home.

There are also some structures that you can put in place at home to help your son. Set a designated homework time and spot - regardless of whether you are there - allow frequent breaks, and pack up all finished assignments right in his backpack.

You can find more homework help for ADHD children here as well.

I hope this helps! Good luck.
