Help with Son's Symptoms - Not Sure If It's ADHD

My son is 6 almost 7 and up until the last few months has had no problems in school. He is very smart and very active boy. He is in 1st grade and recently having problems with some impulsive behavior and the teacher said that he sometimes can't sit still in his seat.

However she said that he always knows what they are talking about and that he is the first one to raise his hand and know the answer. He gets all his work done with no problems and rarely has any homework. He really likes school and is getting all A's and for the most part getting A's and B's on his conduct card everyday.

There have been some small incidents recently in the lunch room and on the playground that has the school concerned. He popped open a bag of someone else's chips at lunch and he likes to goof around at lunch. Also he has a hard time keeping his hands to himself at recess some days. He recently hit another boy with a rope in gym and was sent home.

He goes to a private school and it just seems like they are VERY strict. I don't want to seem naive but I feel like this is just typical boy behavior especially since he is not having any academic problems. I just need more info I guess. Does ADHD sometimes start with just impulsive behavior or hyperactivity and eventually get into academic problems? We have an appointment next week at the pediatrician's office and I'm anxious to see his spin on things. I just don't want to medicate my child to pacify the school. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

ADHD Symptoms

Hello benoitmom:

Thank you for your post. It's true that impulsivity and hyperactivity are symptoms of ADHD. But they are usually accompanied by inattentiveness, trouble listening and following directions, trouble finishing tasks, forgetfulness and more symptoms.

Many parents do report a gradual decline in academic performance as a child with ADHD gets older. Whether this is because of heavier academic workloads or worsening symptoms or simply rising frustration from untreated ADHD, I can't say. But it is probably worth having your son evaluated and talking with the doctor about alternative ADHD treatments that you can try at home even without a diagnosis - simple stuff like nutrition and behavior therapy.

Good luck! And let us know how it turns out...

I wouldnt worry about it yet, there are many symptoms of add and your son is only showing a couple as mentioned.once the school "lablels" him add you'll be pushed to medicate and have alot of non-believers not want to follow any plan of attack...I've been dealing with a school system and son with adhd for 11 yrs..its always a big fight emotionally and not something to take lightly.

Meds arent for everyone either..the side effects may do more harm than good as in are case. you'll always be pushed to send a controllable zombie to school. if his grades are good..don't push it.

Re: Help with Son's Symptoms - Not Sure If It's ADHD

The possibility of ADHD was first mentioned in regard to my son when he was in kindergarten, and the academic difficulties started showing up this year in first grade. My son was frustrated with his homework. I had to sit there and encourage him through every sentence, every math problem, and he was a sobbing mess by the end of it. His handwriting was horrid - it was like he couldn't remember from one time writing to the next how to form the letters, so he struggled to make them come out how he thought they should look. He also had the hyperactivity and impulsivity, but there was a lot more going on with him than what you've described with your son. He could very well be just being a boy. I'd say that it can' t hurt to talk to your doctor, but I'd hold off on seeking a diagnosis unless more symptoms start showing up.

Congratulations! Your kid is alive

He is doing what is sopouse to do. He is trying different thinks and exploring bounderies. Relax and enjoy your son. Motivate him with tv time or stickers if he keeps his hands for himself. If something is bothering them at school or at home kids can react different than usual. Check if there have been any change at school that bother him. Talk to him at bedtime when he is calm and relax. If something is bothering him he will be relieve to share his feelings with you.
