Help with Son's Symptoms - Not Sure If It's ADHD
My son is 6 almost 7 and up until the last few months has had no problems in school. He is very smart and very active boy. He is in 1st grade and recently having problems with some impulsive behavior and the teacher said that he sometimes can't sit still in his seat.
However she said that he always knows what they are talking about and that he is the first one to raise his hand and know the answer. He gets all his work done with no problems and rarely has any homework. He really likes school and is getting all A's and for the most part getting A's and B's on his conduct card everyday.
There have been some small incidents recently in the lunch room and on the playground that has the school concerned. He popped open a bag of someone else's chips at lunch and he likes to goof around at lunch. Also he has a hard time keeping his hands to himself at recess some days. He recently hit another boy with a rope in gym and was sent home.
He goes to a private school and it just seems like they are VERY strict. I don't want to seem naive but I feel like this is just typical boy behavior especially since he is not having any academic problems. I just need more info I guess. Does ADHD sometimes start with just impulsive behavior or hyperactivity and eventually get into academic problems? We have an appointment next week at the pediatrician's office and I'm anxious to see his spin on things. I just don't want to medicate my child to pacify the school. Any help would be appreciated.
