Son on ADHD Meds Has to Use the Bathroom Constantly

My son has been on meds for a year now and after starting Adderall he started to use the bathroom about once an hour. This continued after switching to Vyvance. The Dr. said it was a side effect. Today, his teacher denied him to use the restroom because it exceeded the 3 times per day rule and he ended up wetting himself. He is 8 and hasn't had an "accident" since he was maybe 4 years old! I can not find any resources to show his teacher but will be adding additional bathroom break to his IEP if nessasary. Am I crazy or does anyone else out there have the same issue? Thanks!

Adderall Side Effects

Hi:

You're very smart to update the IEP - no child needs that kind of embarrassment for something they can't control! Dr. Larry Silver, our chief medical expert, answered a question very similar to yours about bladder control issues linked to Adderall that I think might help...

Best of luck!

Bathroom Breaks and Adderall

Hi there, I am an Instructional Aide in the school system and work mostly with children who have ADD/ADHD and Autism. I've never heard of your issue but it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. What I do think is that you shouldn't have to ADD a bathroom break to an IEP. If the teacher is aware of the fact that he is on meds and has ADHD or ADD to begin with, there should be exceptions to the rules. It sounds like this teacher has not worked with special needs children enough and isn't very flexible. If things don't change I would talk to the principal about her lack of flexibility and find other resources to work with your child. How embarrassing for your child and for something that never should have had to happen. When I was in grade 3 my teacher also denied me another bathroom break when I had just had one. I sure showed her when I threw up all over my desk! I thought to myself. that showed her! I cannot stress enough that parents need to be an advocate for their children and stand up to these teachers!

My son had the same issue this year

He is on Ritalin. He would pee his pants in school quite a bit. We found out he was constipated and was put on a fiber supplement. My son had a battery of tests done, checked urine for infection, diabetes, ultrasound of bladder/kidneys, and x-rays.
