Trouble With Teacher

My son and his teacher just don't get along. She has no patience with his hyperactivity and seems almost OCD in the class room with organization. I have tried talking to the principal about my concerns and she said that I am not alone in my feelings; other parents have expressed the same concerns. Here is the big problem: I am having trouble getting them to switch him to a new teacher.

The principal seems to think that there would be more distractions for him in the other classrooms due to other children with adhd being in those classes. While I understand this I am more worried about my sons self esteem and self worth, this teacher constantly "puts him down" and "singles him out in the classroom." I have never heard a pleasant thing come out of this teacher's mouth even though everyone else in the school (music, art, pe, AR teachers) have all said how smart, friendly, and helpful my son is.

Does anyone have any suggestions for helping me be heard? Any information or suggestions I have given the teacher to help her out she shrugs off and doesn't even address. Not to mention that there is absolutely no communication between her and I.

Working with the Teacher

Hello:

This sounds like a tough situation, but you've come to the right place! First of all, does your son have a formal IEP or 504 Plan for classroom accommodations? If not, this is a great place to start because, once established, the teacher is legally obligated to adhere to the ADHD accommodations.

Here is more information about setting up accommodations at school.

One accommodation worth exploring is a daily report card, which may make your child's teacher feel more in control of the situation, too...

I would also recommend reading through ADDitude's best articles about working with teachers. You'll find some great advice there about communication, partnering with the teacher, etc.

I hope this helps!

Lucky

You guys are so lucky in the USA ..here in Australia the education systen does not acknowledge ADHD/ADD as a disability ..therefore my child is not entitled to additional support in the school system. She has had a hard time with her schooling and once the teachers know she has ADHD she is treated differently. We have had enough of her being bullied and tormented. The teachers dont care. How does your support system work in the USA? cheers
