ADHD Child Being Held Back for Social Issues

our son has been put in a 2nd grade class that has 1rst, &2nd grades. He is overexceeding and has done well. They are accomodating and giving him more challenging work but the classroom is a repeat for him. He states he is bored and frankly is content as he doesn't have to work at it. We are worried however if we want to transition him back to a regular school he will be behind. He is a twin and so we see what he should be doing this year and don't want to miss out. We are meeting with the school to discuss whether or not to put him back into a 3-4th grade class where he will be behind socially. He has confidence galore and has no problem keeping up with the info it is just social skills and maturity he lags. Any thoughts? Keep him behind with peers who some are more immature or move him back to 3rd with some who may be more mature???

ADHD and Social Skills

Hi JK:

Welcome to the ADDitude forums and thanks for posting. Social skills are often a big stumbling block for ADHD children, who sometimes lack the social awareness and ability to check themselves that other kids possess.

But if your son is confident and excelling in school, I personally think he deserves the chance to challenge himself academically. I don't have any evidence or research behind this, just my own 2 cents.

Here are some more articles about ADHD social skills that might help...
