Metadate

Please share your experience treating ADHD symptoms with Metadate... Did you notice any side effects? What dosage worked best? Would you recommend it?

I used to work with a psychiatrist who used this medication with children. At times I saw some good results, but in general the children were rather moody especially if the child was using one dose.

so far so good

My 8 yo son has been taking Metadate CD (long acting) since August. He is having the best school year he's had thus far. Behaviorally, he seems to have turned a corner where we're not getting chronic calls from the principal or notes sent home from the teacher about lashing out or being obstinate in the classroom. In fact, I recently asked his teacher if he still seems to "stand out' as someone who needs many reminders or is distracting to others. She said "definitely not". This is BIG for him, and me! In the beginning he did complain a little of headaches but that seemed to pass after a week or two. He takes a little longer to wind down to get to sleep now (9pm rather than 8:30pm), but his appetite has been very good too. We do usually opt not to medicate on weekends or over breaks but I can notice a difference. He went grocery shopping with me over the last break from school and was a little loud and wild in the store. Next day (on meds) we went out again and he was a different child --calm, quiet and better-behaved. One thing I have noticed if he's medicated on a weekend or at home and there's little structure, he can appear sulky and bored. He can get irritable and seem not able to find anything engaging to do. Usually some good physical activity will get him out of the funk--walking on our treadmill or riding his scooter outside when the weather's decent. It's my hope that as my son gets older he will be able to better tell when, and if he needs the meds. I'm hoping that the habits he's developing in the classroom will stick, even if he decides he wants to limit his med use. Ultimately, it will be his choice.
