ADHD, Umemployed and Soon to be Unisnured.

I’ve dealt with not only ADD most of my life, and I’ve been handed a heaping dose of depression. While highly educated, after graduating with my masters (in special ed of all things), I can only stay at my job for three months due to over stressing and being highly disorganized and lacking management. I was encouraged to find a new psychrist and I’ve done so, but it was too little too late.

I’ve recently lost my latest job and I’m terrified about the prospect. I will not be able to afford COBRA to continue my medical treatments and can’t get private insurance due to my preexisting conditions. I’m honestly terrified and have no clue where to turn to. While I feel that my current medication isn’t working, but I know I can’t function without medication assistance.

Hang On!

My heart goes out to you. I too have struggled with unemployment and being under-employed for the past 20 years. Right now I work 3 part-time jobs and am also getting my own business going! I know full well that the stress of financial uncertainty can be overwhelming at times, but we have to press on - medication defiintely helps keep things more manageable, but I always feel like I'm capable of doing better/earning more, yet can't seem to make it happen. The other day I was reviewing some notes I'd made (on yet another little piece of paper stuffed into a book!) about coaching for adults with ADD. I've decided to ask a relative to sponsor me to get some coaching, as I have no extra funds for anything beyond paying the regular daily living bills. You might consider this too - hope it helps. Perhaps you could get a sponsor (a social service agency or church) to help cover the medication cost on a short term basis?

Sorry to hear about your troubles

In my state NJ we have counselling services in mot of our major cities that do not cost anything. If you live in a large state maybe they also have something like this. Look into a free program that supponsers medications for those who cannot afford them Montel Williams had a program he supported . They have a truck that goes around that provide very lost cost medications. If you have prescriptions many of the drug comapniaes have these programs as well. Make sure you have yuour depression treated becasue depression in many ways will effect how you will respond to the day and day pressures. Get your resume together so you can send it to employers; and have someone in your profession who can help you assess your strengths and difficulties. Honestly it may be harder to do this your self but unbiased person will help. My cousin is a special -ed educator ;but quit teaching . It may help to know with this education you maybe able to do other thing. Right now she works as a patient representative due to her people skills. We have allot of ADHD in our family and her son is a severely disabled due to ADHD;but has been able to open his own business. So their is hope!!! As far insurance right now it may be out of reach. In my state they do Charity care ; and hospitalization , hospital testing etc is free ; buit they must get their own medication etc. Generic meds such as my Ritalin La and Welbutrin XL work just as welll as the trade name.; but cost lest then 30 dollars a month. Make sure you do not let the depression get out of hand because if it does you will not be able to lift your head off the pillow. Make it a goal and do it , get out of bed , eat breakfast , wash and go out . Volunteer at local churches , schools, hospitals and begin talking to people you never know something may happen and you will be working. My husband took test for the police force and different correction, protection things and if he can do it as 52 white male what is stopping you. You are not stuck in Special ed you have a wealth of experience and education. who knows look at the opportunity this lends you ; and not as a defeat even if it fells like one. I suck at organization so I don't work on a med surg floor ; but work in the ED so I can do the different things my mind craves versus the same old thing. It also help to vison what you want , write it down and start to make it happen. Believe in your self, do not be too proud to ask for help ; and if you believe in God pray about the things you need to know. I live through a downsizing and was the first nurse to leave the hopital years ago. I trusted by intutuion and took it instead of accepting a float job in the ICU . In a week I had a offering and was a manager for 6 years , left this job and learned MDS today I have the MDS perdiem job and a full time nurse job. I have faith in my abilities that I will survive and it always does. Believe in yourself. Keep in touch and let us know how you do.
