Swearing Help For 10-Year-Old...

I was wondering if anyone has dealt with swearing in their adhd child. I have a 10 year old who has been consistenly swearing, not only is he not setting a good example for his brother it has become untolerable. We have tried just about everything to stop it but nothing seems to work and would appreciate anyones input ,I am will to try anything at this point.

Thank you for time

ADHD Impulses

Hi there:

You pose a really good question about curbing swearing in an ADHD child. I looked back in our expert archives and couldn't find anything specific to swearing, but I did find this article about curbing impulsivity in ADHD children that might help with some ideas.

I know most non-ADHD kids show off bad behaviors like this in order to get attention. With ADDers it might be that, or it might be the common problem of keeping impulses in check.

Have you looked into behavior therapy?

Best of luck!

swearing

My daughter who is 11 has the same problem. We tell her that is not appropriate but she keeps doing it. We send her to her room for time out which she doesnt like. She also cracks her knuckles consistently. I have done some reasearch and the research indicates that such ticks are often linked to Retalin usage. Its almost like Touretts. I believe the ADHD childs thoughts get stuck in a groove so to speak where they cant contain the impulse to swear, crack and fidget. We are learning to live with it. What more can we do?
