Using Methylin For Quick Onset While Daytrana Patch Kicks In

Hi all.

My 8 yo son was diagnosed approximately 10 months ago, and has been using the Daytrana patch 10mg dose daily since. The patch helps him significantly, but we are finding it very slow to kick in. We have made adjustments to our morning routine, but we're still hearing from his teachers that his mornings are "rough."

One of the things we are considering is asking the doctor about taking the liquid form of immediate-release Methylin when he first wakes up and applying the patch right before he leaves for school. Based on the drug info, it looks like the Methylin will have a 20-30 min onset time and last approx 4 hours. The Daytrana seems to be taking more than 2 hours for any noticeable effect, and the drug info says 3.6 hours is norm.

Has anyone explored this route? Is there a significant downside to this that I'm missing? At this point, pills are out of the question, he just can't swallow them.

Just wondering. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Daytrana Patch

Hi there:

I don't have any personal experience with Methylin and I haven't heard any success or horror stories, but I did want to alert you to a new Q&A with Dr. Larry Silver that's all about using the Daytrana Patch with your ADHD child.

I hope this helps!

Adding short acting med to long acting

Although I have not used Methylin or Daytrana, I can tell you what our doctor had us do.

My son was on Concerta but he had a difficult time getting up in the morning. Our doctor told us to wake him up 30-45 minutes before he was to get up, just so he could take his medication. In addition to the regular dose of Concerta we were to give him 10 mg. of Focalin. (he usually took 20 mg. of Focalin for late afternoon or early evening activites esp. baseball) It worked like a charm. When it was time to wake up, he got up with no problem. It was extremely effective. Prior to attempting this, I could try making noise, turning on the lights and physically shaking him or even pulling him out of bed, all to no avail.
