Stimulants Stopped Working... What Now?

Hello! I'm 34, but was only diagnosed almost 3 years ago. I realized I had ADHD only after I gave up caffeine in 2002 - apparently I'd been self-medicating for years!

When I was first diagnosed, I tried Ritalin, which worked like a charm for some time. Then I started having trouble remembering to take it, even when I set an alarm. Since then I've tried extended-release forms of Ritalin, Adderall, Vyvanse, and now Focalin. Nothing's working. Even my old regular-release Ritalin pills aren't helping. I even tried going back on caffeine (diet soda, never developed a taste for coffee), but I just get queasy and shaky.

My doc seems a bit confused that I've developed such a tolerance to stimulants - she said it's common to develop a tolerance to where the side effects cease to bother you, but not to build up a tolerance to the primary effects of the meds. Well, common or not, that's what seems to have happened with me.

So my question is, what now? Should I try Strattera or another non-stimulant med? Alternative therapies? I'm currently a college student, so I'm OK for meds (covered by insurance) but anything not covered by insurance could be a financial problem.

Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks! Kaiti

Stimulants not working

What dosage were you taking for the meds such as Adderall, Vyvanse, etc.? You may not have had a strong enough dose.

My husband takes 60 mg. of Adderall and I take 140 mg. of Vyvanse (which is roughly equivalent to 60 mg. of Adderall). sometimes a medication dosage range that is given or included in the medication packet is geared towards children and not adults. So my first question would be what your dosage was. Studies have also shown that many individuals are undermedicated.

Stimulants Stopped Working... what now?

Typically high doses. I don't recall on the Adderall or Vyvanse, but Ritalin was 35mg every 3 hours - any higher and I think the doc would have had a heart attack on my behalf. Focalin I'm doing 20mg every 3 hours, and I am feeling NO difference between when I take it and when I don't.

Thanks!

Adderall not working, nothing else is either

I was taking Adderall, 10mg twice daily and it worked like a dream. Suddenly at the start of this year I noticed that it just wasn't working any more. So I upped the dosage, to 40mg, 60mg, 80mg and it still didn't work. So I tried Focalin, Vyvanse, currently on strattera and nothing is working. It's very frustrating. Sometimes I wish I had never discovered Adderall, because I got a taste of what its like to have a clear and focussed mind.

Its really frustrating!

If only...

I wish I'd never given up caffeine. It worked better, and for a long time, than anything else.

Strattera

So far I'm up to 60mg/day on the Strattera, not doing much, but the doc said she figured I'd need 80mg or 100mg, given the dosages I've needed for everything else. I have an appointment with her Wednesday, so we'll see how that goes. Wish me luck - a brand new semester starts Monday and I really need to kick some butt this time!

I can relate

Sorry for the late post, I just happened to see this thread and can totally relate. I had the same experience. I was diagnosed at 36 (I am female) and the stimulants completely stopped working after 6 months. I had tried everything, but nothing was working. I did figure out that I have developed a sensitivity to Splenda (sucralose). When it gets in my system, my brain gets all fizzy and whatever stimulant I am on stops working. Period. I also go thru a pretty serious depression while the Splenda is clearing out of my system.

I started taking sea kelp for iodine. Being on stimulants puts a greater strain on your adrenal system. Also, there are lots of things in our environment that compete with iodine (perchlorite, flouride and chlorine) and your skin and reproductive organs need iodine too. I was having symptoms of hypothyroidism even though my levels were normal. I know the symptoms because my mom's hypothyroidim was untreated for several years. After a couple of months, the brain fog dissapated. I take potassium and magnesium and a multivitamin. I occasionally take tryptophan (edit: I mean tyrosine) and 5-htp (a couple of times a month). I would not take them at all if I were still on strattera or wellbutrin. I took melatonin on wellbutrin and that was not a good experience!!! Occasionally I will take tryptophan or melatonin when I can't sleep.

Anyway, I am back on a lower dose of the Adderall (15 mg) than the one I started on (20 mg). I may need to up the dose or switch stimulants every couple of months. I have been on it for less than a month and it is working. It may not be working as well, but it is working. Considering 2 years ago, nothing was working and I thought I was losing my mind, I think I am making progress.

Best of luck to you! Star
